PRODUCT SAFETY
Testing and certification agencies providing a certification
mark for Canada must be accredited by Standard Council
of Canada (SCC) as a Certification Organization (CO)
for the products they certify and must be accepted by
local and provincial authorities throughout Canada.
Generally this accreditation and process is the same
for all agencies and places as other Certification Organizations
such as CSA, UL, TUV, etc.
The process is very simple - products must be tested
and evaluated to Canadian and/or US national standards.
This can be accomplished at the same time products are
submitted to SIEMIC for testing for the UL mark or CE
marking assistance. In many cases the US and Canadian
standards are now harmonized to the IEC standards with
bi-National standards existing between Canada and the
US. This means that with the exception of some national
deviations, a single standard is basically used to evaluate
the product. In other situations standards are not as
similar, however, similar testing can still be grouped
together during the investigation. After successful
completion of the product evaluation authorization is
provided to apply the certification mark.
The following documents together with one to two test
samples are required:
• Electrical Schematics
• Component Details (Manufacturer, Model, existing
Certifications to US/Canadian standards)
• Instruction and Installation Manuals
• Label
• CB reports and certificates
RADIO TYPE APPROVALS

Radio-communication or other intentional
radiators require compliance to applicable Industry
Canada Spectrum Management requirements to market the
products in Canada but not required for Safety certification.
Compliance is typically done by testing through an accredited
laboratory and obtaining certification through Spectrum
Engineering.
TELECOM
APPROVALS

Telecom approval for Canada is relatively straight-forward.
Testing and compliance should be in accordance with technical
standard CS-03.
The requirements are well harmonized with FCC part-68,
and in many instances it is possible to use FCC reports
to obtain approval.
Approval labels must be purchased from Industry Canada
and can only be shipped to addresses in North America
With the pending changes in USA it is expected that
Canada will move quite quickly towards a more deregulated
system based on self-certification
